Health Benefits of Wool

There are many health benefits from using wool:

1. Regulates body temperature & moisture while sleeping
The average person loses a pint of water during an 8-hour sleep.  One of the health benefits of wool is that it has a unique ability to wick moisture away from the body, thus allowing your body to stay dry while sleeping – an important health benefit of wool. Wool bedding can absorb approximately 33% of its own weight before it feels wet. It also insulates your body from the air, allowing it to remain within its comfort zone. Wool breathes better than down, cotton, or synthetic fibres.

2. Prevents bedsores (pressure ulcers)
Wool supports and distributes body weight better than any other natural or synthetic material. The fibres can bend thousands of times without breaking, and have a natural resistance that makes them springier and more resilient. Studies have proven that using a sheepskin will dramatically reduce the chance of acquiring pressure ulcers, or will promote their healing.

3. Resists mold and mildew, dust mites, is fire-retardant, and hypo-allergenic
Most people who believe they are allergic to  wool are actually reacting to the products used in commercially-processed wool. Abrasive washes, sulphuric acid, chlorine treatments, fire repellants, bug spray and other harsh chemicals damage the fibres and detract from wool’s natural qualities. Natural wool resists mold, mildew and flame (wool will not ignite like synthetics). In order to preserve that we wash only in natural soaps. The natural lanolin that is retained makes it resistant to dust mites as well. Allergies to lanolin, the oil found in wool, are quite rare.

4. Is a durable, sustainable, reusable product
The natural resilience of wool fibres mean that it will last for years. It is an extremely durable product – warm even when wet, breathable and a perfect insulator. Our sheep are shorn once a year for their health. Thus wool is also one of the ultimate sustainable products.
